Longer Trip 3 - Two day Car Trip Lençóis

Day 1 - Leave Lençóis and head in the direction of the POÇO ENCATADO – ENCHANTED POOL. This is a distance of 150 km and takes about 2 hrs by car. A 5 minute walk takes to a large lake inside a cave. The lake is 61m deep at its deepest and due to the crystal clear water it is possible to see the bottom. The reflection of the sunlight on the water turns it an amazing electric blue. From April to September due to the position of the sun a shaft of light hits the water creating a laser effect. It is not possible to swim here for ecological reasons. |

Leave Poço Encantado and drive for lunch and a walk around MUCUGÊ The first diamond mining town in the Chapada Diamantina. Famous for the superb and rare Byzantine style Cemetery, shown opposite, which is well worth a visit. |

A 20 minute drive to XIQUE – XIQUE DE IGATÚ Once a large and important diamond mining town with approx. 6.000 inhabitants, but abandoned when the price of diamonds fell leaving 200 inhabitants and a ghost town of beautiful stone ruins. Have dinner and spend the night here. |

Day 2 – Leave Igatu on foot (optional, can go by car) for a 2 hour easy walk along the original paved trail to Andaraí. After sampling the renowned ice cream 45 minutes by car to the POÇO AZUL – BLUE POOL. Another underground pool similar to the Poço Encantado only smaller. Here it is possible to swim and snorkel, so marvelling in the depth and amazing crystal clear water. Enjoy a late lunch here before returning to Lençóis by car. |
